Psalm 56

Be merciful to me, my God,    for my enemies are in hot pursuit;    all day long they press their attack. My adversaries pursue me all day long;    in their pride many are attacking me.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.    In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid.    What can mere mortals do to me?

All day long they twist my words;    all their schemes are for my ruin. They conspire, they lurk,    they watch my steps,    hoping to take my life.Because of their wickedness do not[c] let them escape;    in your anger, God, bring the nations down.

Record my misery;    list my tears on your scroll[d]—    are they not in your record? Then my enemies will turn back    when I call for help.    By this I will know that God is for me.

10 In God, whose word I praise,    in the Lord, whose word I praise—11 in God I trust and am not afraid.    What can man do to me?

12 I am under vows to you, my God;    I will present my thank offerings to you.13 For you have delivered me from death    and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God    in the light of life.

In verse 8, the Psalmist asks his God to list his tears on a scroll. In the midst of the storm, when the enemy has closed in and there is no respite from attack, put your trust in God. And do not be afraid. It's easier said than done and I recognise that sometimes preachers gloss over the pain that someone might be in and platitude. But I hear you and God has heard you. the God in whose word I praise and trust, hears you. He will deliver you from death and stop your feet from stumbling. And through that you will be able to live in the light of life.

Prayer:

Lord, deliver me from the enemies of my mind and from the enemy that seeks to destroy and devour me. Lift my chin to seek You and let me trust deeper in your unfailing love. Come Holy Spirit and dwell within me. In You I trust. Amen.
